The challenge of keeping our food safe in the EU |
|
At the beginning of this year the news broke that 2300 tons of potentially contaminated feed fat had been delivered to 25 German feed manufacturers. Between 100,000 and 200,000 tons of feed had been produced with the tainted ingredient. Almost 5000 farms in Germany had accepted delivery of this product. We were facing the first major food crisis of 2011.
This year alone we dealt with three such crises: the dioxin contamination in Germany, the possible contamination of imported food after the nuclear accident in Japan and the E. Coli outbreak that affected mostly the northern part of Germany.

Developments in European governance and European energy policy |
|
Energy issues will define the politics of the 21st century. Knowing that energy could become a really scarce good in a growing world economy, the battle for energy may even become a matter of survival, of war and peace.

The development of EU/NATO cooperation under the Belgian Presidency |
|
Relations between the European Union and NATO have now reached a key turning point. Indeed, on the one hand, the treaty of Lisbon provides us with new instruments in the field of security and defence while, on the other, the establishment of a new Strategic Concept offers new opportunities for working together more effectively.
Belgium has always treated the improvement of relations between the EU and NATO as a priority of first importance, since these two institutions are the pillars of our foreign and defence policies. Within the framework of our tenure in the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, we are devoting special attention to this subject, with the intention of making real and pragmatic progress. We have fully taken on the new role of the rotating Presidency within the framework of the Treaty of Lisbon, which came into force at the end of last year, by giving our wholehearted support to the work undertaken by the High Representative and the Secretary General of NATO. We are thus devoting special attention to cultivating relations at the political and strategic levels, while also supporting coordination and cooperation between the two organisations’ respective Staff structures.

Telemedicine and Infrastructures in Europe |
A new era for eHealth
Europe’s eHealth sector is in line with the European Commission’s vision for the future: knowledge-based, experience-driven, and continuing to grow in tough economic times.
The European Commission has long understood the potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) to have a positive impact on the lives of patients. Having invested over one billion euros in eHealth research over the past twenty years, we have many evidences of how bringing together ICT and health can save and improve people’s lives. The time has now come to turn the research results into real large-scale benefits. Our finances demand it. Our citizens expect it. And we absolutely need to maintain the strength of this growing industry and the high-paying jobs it supports.

Fighting the dangers of counterfeiting in Europe’s Internal Market |
|
In today’s world, the scope and scale of trade in fake products has become so wide and prevalent that it affects every sector of the economy and virtually all types of products. And it creates serious problems for the health and safety of European citizens.
With the advent of new technologies, digitisation and globalisation, the trade in fake products has grown exponentially. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) estimated that, in 2007, the trade in counterfeit products alone is likely to have been around 250 billion dollars. That is more than the national GDPs of 150 individual countries!
